Mission

The Richmond Black Historical Legacy Project’s mission is to empower the community, inspire future generations, and preserve Black heritage. Through the creation of a vibrant Black History Museum, historical markers, public art, cultural events, lectures, and school curriculum we will tell a rich and comprehensive story of Black resilience, innovation and achievement. Rooted in our connections to Africa, the South, and the African Diaspora, we will integrate Black history into the fabric of the city—ensuring it is accessible, engaging, and economically impactful through strategic partnerships and programming that uplift and sustain our legacy.


Vision

We envision a pervasive, public, and holistic celebration of Black history in Richmond, CA—one that permeates the city, integrating art, business, and public spaces to tell a rich, comprehensive story of Black resilience, culture, and achievement. At the heart of this vision is a vibrant Black History Museum that educates, preserves, and uplifts the contributions of Black Americans, with a special focus on Richmond’s Black history.

This vision embraces our deep connections to Africa, the South, and the African Diaspora ensuring that our history is not confined to a single institution but is woven into the very fabric of the city, making Black history accessible, engaging, and ever-present.

Objectives

Our goal is to create a dynamic and immersive experience of Black history in Richmond, CA, through a multifaceted approach that educates, engages, and empowers the community. We will achieve this by:

  • Establish a Black History Museum and Cultural Center in Richmond
  • Install historical markers to highlight key events, people, and places
  • Create public art that reflects the richness of Black culture and history
  • Host cultural events, lectures, and programming that foster dialogue, learning, and celebration
  • Develop curriculum for schools to teach Black history
  • Strengthen Black businesses and cultural institutions
  • Build partnerships with local, regional, and national organizations to expand impact and resources

Through these efforts, we aim to create a pervasive and lasting presence of Black history that is woven into Richmond’s identity, ensuring it is accessible, engaging, and transformative for generations to come
